WORK PACKAGES

Work Package 1 – MIRACLES: LES simulation code for turbine blade operation

The objective of Work Package 1 (WP1) is to develop and apply a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for simulating tidal turbine blade cavitation in order to explore various passive and active cavitation control strategies and then consider implementing them on a full model of a multi-bladed tidal turbine.

Public deliverables:

Work Package 2 – Active Flow Control strategies and novel test-rigs for tidal turbine composite blades

This work package acts as support for design optimisations completed in WP 4-5 for the Magellan device. To facilitate improved design numerical models will be validated by model testing, active and passive flow control will be developed to improve efficiency and the effect of fouling and cavitation erosion. Test rigs to accomplish the above will developed and increased capability in numerical models will be an effect.

Public deliverables:

Work Package 3 – Nano-reinforced composites, antifouling coatings and antifouling biomimetic surfaces

WP3 deals with the integration of new materials for the blades. These materials could be at nanometric scale inside the blade to increase the mechanical properties or enhanced coatings with increased barrier wear, impact and anti-fouling properties and bio-mimetic surfaces to protect blades against ageing, wear and biological growth effects.

Public deliverables:

Work Package 4 – Testing Campaign for Behavioural Models Development

WP4 is devoted to test, characterize and validate results coming from WP2 and WP3. Best performing materials developed in WP3 will be tested and characterized at lab and field scale, while accuracy and repeatability of test rigs and testing procedures developed in WP2 will be validated. Results obtained in WP4 will be the basis for the design of innovative and enhanced models, testing and procedures in WP5.

Work Package 5 – Innovative and enhanced models, testing and design procedures

In WP5 numerical methodologies for the design of new generation tidal blades will be developed. These numerical methodologies comprehend ageing, fouling and wear modeling, material design, and damage tolerance calculation. The WP will result not only in an enhanced tidal blade prototype fulfilling the project requirements but also in a methodology for the design of future tidal blades.

Public deliverables:

Work Package 6 – Cross-cutting activities

In WP6 NEMMO’s consortium will analyse the environmental impacts of the project outcomes along its life cycle based on two different scenarios: a 34MW tidal farm, and a 100MW one. Firstly, a cradle to grave approach analysis from manufacturing to final decommissioning will be performed. Secondly, project outcomes will be validated through a techno-economic assessment to estimate LCOE achievements by 2025 and 2030. And finally, a socio-economic assessment with relevant actors and social systems will be performed, so social impacts and barriers can be identified.

Public deliverables:

Work Package 7 – Exploitation, Dissemination and Communication

WP7 is split into two parts. Firstly, communications and dissemination activities will be undertaken to maximise project visibility and recognition, and to ensure that results are shared as widely as possible with target audiences. The second part – exploitation – will focus on protecting the results and knowledge generated by the project, and further commercialising the project innovations.

Public deliverables:

Work Package 8 – Project Management

And finally, WP8 will take care that both the general project objectives and the individual work package objectives are met, while controlling project costs, managing and monitoring risks, and legal and contractual aspects of the project. Last but not least, internal and external communication will both be managed to ensure optimal information flow among all key stakeholders.
