WHAT IS
THE NEMMO PROJECT?

The Next Evolution in Materials and Models for Ocean Energy project aimed to boost the competitiveness of tidal energy by optimising tidal turbine blade design and performance.

The project aimed to create a larger, lighter and more durable composite blade for floating tidal turbines, enabling devices to reach capacities of over 2 MW.

THE PROJECT AIMED TO:

WHY
DO WE NEED NEMMO?

Tidal energy is an essential part of Europe’s energy future. It is a clean, predictable energy source, and the potential tidal resource is huge.

The EU has set an ambitious goal to reach 100GW installed capacity for wave and tidal energy by 2050.

The design of tidal turbine blades is crucial to the performance and efficiency of the device, and has a major impact on the upscaling of tidal turbines.

The European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) has established cost targets for tidal energy of 15 c€/kWh by 2025 and 10c€/kWh by 2030.

Technological advances in areas such as blade design are an integral part of bringing down the LCOE (Levelised Cost of Energy) in line with these targets.

BENEFITS
FOR THE WHOLE TIDAL ENERGY SECTOR

The NEMMO project innovations will benefit the tidal energy sector overall. A blade with increased yield and reduced costs will aid tidal energy developers in commercialising their devices and securing investment for projects.

The advances in the state-of-the-art of design, modelling, materials and testing have a broad range of applications for those working in research and the tidal energy supply chain.
